Tritons Take Home Nine League Awards at Track and Field League Finals and Send Seven Athletes to CIF Prelims
The Pacifica Christian Track and Field Team has had a record-breaking season yet again. On Thursday the squad sent 29 athletes to compete in League Finals, the most in program history! Both boys and girls teams had solid performances as the boy's squad finished third overall with 94 points and the girl's finished second with 106 points. Head Coach Josh Espinoza was also named Coach of the Year for the Boy's and Girl's Teams.
The day went very well for the program as four different athletes won their events, totaling nine first-place finishes. Senior Caeden Connell took first place in the high jump with a distance of 5-10.00. Connell qualified for the CIF Prelims in the high jump as well as in the 4x400 relay. Junior Aiden Hart has continued to stand out in the hurdles and long jump events, as he took first in the 110M Hurdles, 300M hurdles, and the long jump including setting a new personal record of 16.62 in the 110M Hurdles. Hart will compete in all three of those events in CIF Prelims, and will also run in the 4x400 relay.
Senior Grace College commit Ian Cross took first place in the 1600m with a time of 4:44.92 and qualified for CIF Prelims in his event. Charis Wondercheck dominated Thursday afternoon as she took first in four events, and was named Female Track Athlete of the Meet. Wondercheck continues to break records this season as she set a new personal record in the 200m and the 100M Hurdles. She won the 200m with a new personal record of 26.67, the 100M Hurdles with a personal record of 14.67, the 300M hurdles, and the long jump. Charis is a 4x League Champion in the 200m, 100M and 300M Hurdles, and the high jump and is ranked as one of the top athletes in the state for the 100M Hurdles.
Three additional athletes have qualified for CIF Prelims after Thursday's performances. Sophomore Ashley Gundlach in the 3200m, Senior Isaiah Paschal in the triple jump as well as the 4x400 relay, and Tanner Deal in the 4x400 relay. Two more school records were broken including Senior Jaelin Morris in the shot put with a distance of 35' 2.5" and freshman Samuel Gibbs in the discus with a distance of 85' 8.
CIF Prelims will take place on Saturday, May 6th at Carpinteria High School.
