Pacifica Christian Orange County Named California’s 2026 High School Athletic Department of the Year
Pacifica Christian High School Orange County is proud to announce that it has been named California's 2026 High School Athletic Department of the Year by The AEA Institute, a recognition that celebrates innovation in athletics and honors departments helping redefine what high school sports can be. The award recognizes athletic departments that use sports as a platform for leadership, culture, innovation, and community impact, with evaluation centered on three key areas: athletic department innovation, leadership development through athletics, and community impact and engagement. As a state winner, Pacifica Christian receives official designation as California's High School Athletic Department of the Year, with the recognition also being shared with the Governor's Office, in addition to national recognition, media outreach, digital award assets, a commemorative award, and inclusion in a national listing.
The AEA Institute is a national organization focused on mental performance, resilience, and mindset training for athletes, coaches, leaders, and families. Selected as the only school in California to receive this recognition, Pacifica Christian stood out among a strong pool of athletic departments from across the state.
Pacifica Christian's program was recognized for its commitment to:
- Leadership development
- Intentional culture building
- Innovation across programs
- Community engagement and impact
At Pacifica Christian, athletics is viewed as a powerful tool of formation. Shaping students not only in sport, but for life. This award reflects a department committed to the journey of the student-athlete: the daily formation of character, discipline, resilience, leadership, relationships, and purpose. It is a recognition not only of athletic excellence, but of the way athletics helps shape the culture of the whole school.
"At Pacifica Christian, we believe athletics is one of the most powerful platforms for formation in a young person's life," said Brandon Gonzalez, Director of Athletics & Student Life. "This recognition means a great deal because it reflects the daily journey. How we build leaders, shape culture, pursue excellence, and create meaningful experiences for our students and school community."
That commitment is seen in the signature events and community moments that have become part of Pacifica's identity. Bring the Rain, the school's electric boys basketball home opener, with close to 2000 spectators in 2025, has grown into a defining community event. The Pacifica Christian Girls Basketball Showcase presented by B&B Real Estate has also grown into one of the premier girls basketball showcases on the West Coast, bringing together elite programs, high-level competition, and meaningful exposure for student-athletes while elevating the experience and visibility of girls basketball.
Pacifica's culture of engagement is also reflected in school wide events that connect athletics, community, and student life. First Friday helps launch the school year in a uniquely Pacifica way, with the school shutting down at mid-day to celebrate together and rally around a girls volleyball match played in the middle of the school day. Wedge Week, one of Pacifica's spirited and long standing traditions, brings the campus together through themed events, school pride, athletic contests, and shared experiences that strengthen community and celebrate what makes the school distinct. The Gathering, a newer admissions event, creates an intentional opportunity for prospective families and students to experience Pacifica's culture, community, and mission firsthand. From these major community traditions to the intentional practice of hand-delivering acceptance packages to student-athletes and families, Pacifica continues to build a culture where people feel seen, known, and welcomed.
Pacifica's commitment to innovation and athletic excellence is also reflected in the Triton Lab, a high-level performance space that supports strength development, sports medicine, rehabilitation, movement training, and sport-specific development. The Triton Lab represents Pacifica's continued investment in giving student-athletes an environment that reinforces excellence and supports the whole athlete.
As California's 2026 High School Athletic Department of the Year, Pacifica Christian is honored to be recognized for the way it uses athletics to form students, strengthen school culture, and impact the broader community.
