Pacifica Christian High School Athletics

The Conclusion of the 2021-2022 Athletic Year

Pacifica Christian Athletics has officially finished the 2021-2022 season, but not without another record-setting year across the Fall, Winter, and Spring sports. The Tritons also had several standout athletes that earned incredible honors for their athleticism and several teams that had record-breaking seasons.

Our Fall Sports began the year strong as Cross Country and Girl's Volleyball got started in the summer. The Cross Country team, led by Head Coach Josh Espinoza, headed to Flagstaff, Arizona for a two-week team retreat and to train in the high altitude conditions to prepare for the season ahead. Cross Country placed third overall in the league, had six runners named to the Academy All-League Team, and Coach Espinoza was recognized as a Brooks Inspiring Coach of the Year. Girl's Volleyball kicked off their year in early August and had an impressive run into the post-season. After a big five-set win over sister-school Pacifica Christian Santa Monica earlier in the season, the squad made it to the Semi-finals of the CIF-SS Playoffs and Quarterfinals of the CIF State Playoffs. Coach Ally Garrett's team also had six athletes named to the Academy All-League team, including Junior Rebecca Penjoyan who was named Academy League Player of the Year.

Junior Bree Clark led the Girl's Tennis squad as they dove into their second year as a program. After placing third in league, the Tritons were selected for the CIF-SS Wildcard match where they, unfortunately, lost to Esperanza High school. Bree Clark and Kiana Giunta made a deep run into the doubles CIF-SS Playoffs but ended another record-breaking season in the semifinals. Three pairs and Mary Callaghan were named to the All-League team to round out Girl's Tennis' second year!

Girl's Golf and Boy's Beach Volleyball also had great seasons in the Fall. Girl's Golf has a young team and is excited to hit the links again with Head Coach Jeff Anderson. Junior Natalie Ferdi and Sophomore Sam Davidson led the squad, qualifying for the League Tournament for a 2nd straight year. Boy's Beach also had a great season on the sand. Even though it is not a CIF sport, the squad still found big wins throughout the season like their 7-0 sweep against Crean Lutheran in Irvine. Congratulations to our Fall Sports for their fantastic seasons!

Kicking off the Winter season is none other than the soccer squads. Boy's Soccer returned this season after its one-year hiatus due to COVID and showed out with a solid group of student-athletes. Senior Nathan Kutscher led the squad and was named to the second team Academy All-League team. Junior Noah Evans and Junior Will Carlson also led the squad with their athleticism and commitment. Girl's Soccer also had a great season as they boasted over thirty girls that rostered a Varsity and a JV squad, finishing the year 14-8-1. The team only graduated four seniors, leaving behind a young team for the 2022-2023 season.

Boy's Basketball had another tremendous year in the San Joaquin League as they placed third in league. The squad also saw the return of the infamous Bring the Rain Game, hosted at Vanguard University. After qualifying for the post-season, the Tritons fell to Edison High School in the CIF-SS quarterfinals by three points. In addition to the three players named to the San Joaquin All-League Team, Senior Riyaan Jiwani broke the career three's school record at 181 early in the season and Junior Parker Strauss was named to the Boy's Basketball Daily Pilot Dream Team. Parker was also honored by making 1st Team All CIF.

Girl's Basketball had a historic 2021-2022 season, one we won't soon forget. The Tritons competed against some of the best girl's basketball teams in the country, like La Jolla Country Day, in elite tournaments during their preseason and won a third Academy League Title. During the postseason, the squad dominated in CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs and returned to the final site for the second year in a row. The Tritons defeated Temple City to become the Divison 4 CIF-SS Girl's Basketball Champions, as well as the first team to achieve this honor in school history. The team also made it to the second round of the CIF State Playoffs, rounding out their impressive season. Freshman Addison Deal lead the squad offensively and was named Academy League Player of the Year. She was also named CIF-SS Division 4 Player of the Year, added to the All-Orange County First Team, and named to the Daily Pilot Girl's Basketball Dream Team.

Heading into the Spring Season, Girl's Beach Volleyball got to work in the sand. Competing for the first time as a CIF-SS sport, Coach Ally Garrett led the young team through a solid season. The squad tallied big wins against Irvine High School and Rosary Academy on their home court in Huntington Beach. Boy's Golf also had a great season and finished the season with a 6-5 record. The squad sent three golfers to league preliminaries and two made it on to the finals. Eston Kallins and Charles Thurston were named to the first-team All-League, after placing third and sixth in league respectively. Baseball made its way onto the diamond for the team's inaugural season. Led by Head Coach Chris Gomez, the squad competed well against strong teams in the league and even snagged some big wins over Fairmont Prep, Avalon, and TVT. Senior Jamie Mckay was named to the All-League team and Caeden Connell was an honorable mention in the All-League picks.

Boy's Volleyball had another spectacular season, boasting an experienced roster with six seniors leading the team. The Tritons had several big wins before qualifying for playoffs,  beating Division 3 #6 Laguna Beach in a five-set thriller and Division 4 #1 Capistrano Valley Christian on the road during their senior night. After placing third in league, the Tritons defeated their first two opponents handsomely in the CIF-SS Playoffs but fell in the quarterfinals to Portola High School in a five-set nailbiter. The squad ended their season with a 22-10 record and ranked #4 in CIF-SS Division 4 Senior Dan Demars was named the San Joaquin Libero of the Year. Bennet Penticuff, Buzz Hodson, and Knox Vail were also honored with All-League team awards.

Track and Field had a historic year as they secured several league titles and sent ten athletes to the CIF-SS Preliminaries. On the girl's side, Head Coach Josh Espinoza was dubbed San Joaquin League Coach of the Year after his team's phenomenal showing. Charis Wondercheck stunned the league with her impressive times in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles events. During the middle of the season, the junior was ranked #14 in the Southern Section Rankings in the 100-meter hurdles event. Wondercheck also secured two league titles and broke four school records this season. The Lady Tritons broke twelve school records this season and had five athletes named to the All-League team. The Boy's Track and Field team also had a historic season. After breaking 11 school records, the squad also went on to secure four league titles. Sophomore Aiden Hart had quite the season out on the track, after earning two league titles and breaking four school records. Heading into the postseason, the boy's 4x400 team and Charis Wondercheck qualified for three events. This was the first time in the history of the Pacifica Christian Track and Field that Tritons competed in the CIF-SS Finals.

Pacifica Christian Athletics ends the 2021-2022 school year with 55 student-athletes named to All-League teams, three league players of the year, one CIF-SS player of the year, and over 20 school records broken. We are incredibly proud of another fantastic athletic year and are even more delighted in the culture and development of strong moral character in the young men and women in our athletic programs. Congratulations, Tritons, on another great year!
